The loudest guy in the savanna — and proud of it.
You’ll find this flashy fellow in the savannas, cattle pastures, and wide-open fields of the Magdalena Medio, always picking the highest spot to make his presence known. And oh, he makes it very known.
The male is dressed to impress: bold black feathers and a blazing red chest that screams, “Look at me!” — and trust us, you will. He sings loudly from fence posts and branches, showing off his territory like it’s prime real estate. If birds had microphones, he’d carry two.
Now the female? Total contrast. She’s all cryptic beauty — camouflaged in subtle browns, quiet, reserved, and probably hiding in the grass thinking, “I don’t know why I married this guy.”
They may look mismatched, but that’s nature’s perfect duet: one does the singing, the other does the surviving. Territorial, conspicuous, and impossible to ignore, this couple owns the open landscape.
And despite all that drama, the Red-breasted Meadowlark is still doing just fine — listed as Least Concern (LC). But don’t tell him that. He probably thinks he's endangered just to get more attention."
